Retuning the Physical Body: Psychedelics, Neuroplasticity, and Unexpected Healing

Our bodies are constantly communicating with us, yet many of us have forgotten how to listen. A tight jaw, shallow breathing, persistent pain, digestive discomfort, chronic tension, or an injury that never seems to fully resolve are often treated as isolated problems to be managed or overcome. But what if they are also messages? What if the body is not simply malfunctioning, but adapting, protecting, and responding to experiences that have shaped the nervous system over the course of a lifetime?

For centuries, healing traditions around the world have recognized that the mind and body are inseparable. Ancient systems of medicine viewed physical symptoms not merely as mechanical failures, but as expressions of a larger relationship between our thoughts, emotions, environment, and way of living. Modern neuroscience is beginning to echo that understanding, revealing how closely our experiences become woven into the biology of the nervous system. Every stressful event, meaningful relationship, joyful memory, and traumatic experience leaves an imprint, influencing not only how we think and feel, but also how we move, breathe, perceive pain, and interact with the world around us.

As research into psychedelic medicine continues to expand, another intriguing question has begun to emerge. Beyond the profound psychological and spiritual experiences that many people describe, could these compounds also influence the physical body by helping the nervous system become more adaptable? Could they create temporary conditions in which long-established patterns of tension, pain, movement, or perception become flexible enough to be revisited? While definitive answers remain elusive, the question itself is reshaping the way researchers, clinicians, and individuals think about healing.

It is important to approach this conversation with both curiosity and humility. Psychedelic research has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade, but much of what captures public attention is still preliminary. Laboratory studies, animal research, clinical trials, case reports, and personal testimonies each contribute valuable pieces to a much larger puzzle, yet they do not all carry the same scientific weight. A powerful personal experience can be deeply meaningful without establishing a universal truth, just as promising laboratory findings require careful human research before becoming accepted medical treatments. Holding both wonder and discernment allows us to remain open to new possibilities without moving beyond what the evidence can honestly support.

Rather than asking whether psychedelics are miracle cures, I find myself asking a different question. What if, under the right circumstances, they help create conditions in which healing becomes possible? That distinction may seem subtle, but it changes the entire conversation. Healing is rarely something that happens to us. More often, it is something the body gradually accomplishes when the obstacles standing in its way begin to soften. Whether those obstacles involve chronic stress, unresolved trauma, learned patterns of protection, or the ways our nervous system has adapted over time, the possibility of greater flexibility may be one of the most significant contributions these medicines have to offer.

One concept that appears repeatedly throughout the scientific literature is neuroplasticity, the brain's remarkable ability to reorganize itself throughout life. For many years, scientists believed that the adult brain was relatively fixed, with limited capacity for change after childhood. We now know that this is far from true. Every time we learn a new skill, recover from an injury, form a habit, or change the way we respond to a familiar situation, the brain is strengthening, weakening, or creating neural connections. Neuroplasticity is the biological foundation of learning, adaptation, and recovery.

Researchers are now exploring whether psychedelic compounds may temporarily enhance this natural capacity for change. Early studies suggest they may influence communication between brain networks while promoting biological processes associated with neuronal growth, emotional learning, and increased cognitive flexibility. Although these findings remain an active area of investigation, they point toward an intriguing possibility. If the nervous system becomes more adaptable for a period of time, perhaps deeply ingrained patterns, whether emotional, behavioral, or physical, become more available for change than they ordinarily would.

I often think about this process through the lens of music. When a guitar falls out of tune, we do not assume it is broken. The strings have not disappeared, nor has the instrument lost its ability to create something beautiful. It has simply drifted away from resonance. The solution is not to replace the instrument but to carefully adjust it until harmony is restored. Our nervous systems may function in much the same way. Over the course of our lives, injury, stress, trauma, illness, repetitive movement, and emotional experiences can gradually shape the ways our bodies respond to the world. Patterns that were once protective may become habitual long after the original threat has passed. Muscles remain guarded, breathing becomes shallow, pain persists, and the body continues playing a song it learned years ago.

This metaphor has profoundly influenced the way I understand psychedelic experiences. Rather than imagining these medicines as substances that simply remove symptoms, I have come to wonder whether they sometimes create an opportunity for the body to hear itself more clearly. Sensations that have faded into the background suddenly become noticeable. Long-held tension rises into awareness. The relationship between posture, emotion, movement, and pain becomes easier to recognize. In that moment, the medicine itself may not be doing the healing at all. Instead, it may be creating a temporary opening in which the nervous system becomes capable of recognizing patterns that have remained hidden for years.

Of course, recognizing a pattern is only the beginning. Lasting healing rarely comes from a single experience, no matter how profound it may feel. The insights gained during an altered state must eventually find expression in everyday life through movement, therapy, healthy relationships, nutrition, sleep, mindfulness, and countless small choices that gradually reinforce new ways of living. The experience may illuminate the path, but walking that path remains our responsibility. In that sense, psychedelic experiences are perhaps best understood not as cures, but as catalysts, experiences that may reveal new possibilities while reminding us that meaningful healing is ultimately an ongoing relationship with our own bodies.

What the Research Is Beginning to Show

As scientists continue exploring psychedelic medicine, one theme appears repeatedly across the research: these compounds seem to influence far more than perception alone. Investigators are examining changes in neuroplasticity, inflammation, emotional learning, pain processing, and communication between different regions of the brain. While much of this work remains in its early stages, it suggests that psychedelic experiences may create a temporary period in which the nervous system becomes more adaptable, allowing long-established patterns to be revisited in ways that are not yet fully understood. Whether those changes ultimately translate into lasting healing is still an open question, but the research is beginning to provide intriguing clues.

One of the most exciting areas of investigation involves DMT and experimental stroke recovery. In 2025, researchers published a study in Science Advances examining DMT in both cell cultures and animal models of ischemic stroke. They observed reductions in damaged brain tissue, decreased swelling and neuroinflammation, preservation of the blood-brain barrier, and improvements in several neurological outcomes within the animal models. These findings suggest that DMT may influence biological processes involved in protecting the brain after injury, particularly by reducing inflammation and helping maintain the integrity of tissues that normally become compromised following a stroke.

It is essential to place those findings in the proper context. This research was not conducted in human stroke survivors, nor does it demonstrate that DMT can restore neurological function in people. Stroke remains a medical emergency requiring immediate conventional treatment, and no one should interpret these findings as justification for self-treatment. What the study does provide is a compelling biological reason to continue investigating DMT's therapeutic potential. In fact, pharmaceutical researchers are now exploring intravenous, non-psychedelic forms of DMT to determine whether these neuroprotective effects can be safely translated into clinical care. Whether those efforts ultimately prove successful remains unknown, but they reflect a growing recognition that these compounds may influence the brain in ways extending beyond subjective experience.

Another remarkable example comes from a recently published case report involving a woman living with advanced Alzheimer's disease. After nearly a decade of progressive decline, she had lost much of her ability to communicate, required extensive assistance with daily activities, and experienced significant impairment in mobility, swallowing, continence, and emotional expression. Following a supervised psychedelic experience, her caregivers reported a temporary but striking improvement in several areas. She began speaking spontaneously about autobiographical memories, engaged more fully with those around her, walked with greater independence, and demonstrated emotional responsiveness that had largely disappeared in previous years.

The authors of the report were appropriately cautious in their conclusions. They did not describe the experience as a cure or reversal of Alzheimer's disease, nor should a single case report ever be interpreted as proof that similar outcomes will occur in others. Nevertheless, stories like this challenge our assumptions about the brain's capacity for change. They raise fascinating questions about whether certain abilities remain present but inaccessible beneath the progression of neurological disease, and whether altered patterns of brain activity might occasionally allow temporary access to functions that appeared lost. Cases such as these should inspire rigorous scientific investigation rather than unrealistic expectations, but they remind us that there is still much we do not understand about the human brain.

Researchers are also examining how psychedelics may influence chronic pain, another condition in which the nervous system plays a central role. Pain is often imagined as a direct signal coming from injured tissue, yet chronic pain is considerably more complex. It is shaped not only by inflammation and structural injury, but also by memory, emotion, fear, attention, muscle guarding, and the brain's ongoing interpretation of sensory information. Modern pain science increasingly recognizes that pain is both a physical and neurological experience, emerging through constant communication between the body and the brain.

Recent animal studies have shown reductions in pain-related behaviors following psychedelic administration, while reviews of the existing human literature describe these compounds as promising, though still experimental, tools for chronic pain conditions. One possibility is that psychedelics do not directly repair damaged tissue, but instead influence the nervous system's relationship with pain itself. They may reduce chronic muscular guarding, interrupt cycles of fear and hypervigilance, soften emotional distress surrounding an injury, or help individuals recognize movement patterns that unknowingly contribute to ongoing discomfort. While these ideas remain under active investigation, they offer a broader understanding of what healing may involve. Sometimes the most important change is not the disappearance of pain, but a transformation in how the nervous system experiences and responds to it.

Not every area of research has produced encouraging results, and that is equally important to acknowledge. Microdosing LSD has generated widespread interest as a potential treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, supported by countless personal anecdotes describing improvements in focus, creativity, and motivation. However, the first randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating repeated low doses in adults with ADHD found that although the treatment appeared generally safe and well tolerated within the study, it did not outperform placebo in reducing ADHD symptoms. These findings do not invalidate individual experiences, but they remind us that compelling anecdotes and controlled scientific evidence are not the same thing. Remaining intellectually honest means embracing both positive and negative findings as our understanding continues to evolve.

As I have followed this growing body of research, I have found myself returning to the same question. What if these medicines are not simply acting on isolated symptoms, but on the larger systems that organize our experience? The nervous system regulates movement, attention, pain, emotion, learning, memory, and our sense of safety within the world. If psychedelic experiences temporarily increase the flexibility of that system, it becomes easier to understand why one person might experience emotional healing, another might develop a new relationship with chronic pain, and someone else might become aware of physical patterns they had never consciously recognized before. Although science has not yet provided definitive answers, it is beginning to offer a framework for asking better questions.

That framework has also changed the way I understand my own experiences. Rather than viewing healing as something extraordinary that suddenly happened to me, I began to recognize it as a gradual process of becoming more aware. The most meaningful changes were not dramatic physical miracles, but moments in which I could finally perceive relationships between tension, movement, emotion, and the body that had remained invisible for years. Those experiences, along with similar stories shared by individuals I have worked with, have reinforced my belief that awareness itself may be one of the most powerful catalysts for healing.

Listening to the Body

As I continued exploring both the research and my own experiences, I found myself thinking less about healing as something that happens to us and more about healing as something that emerges when we begin paying attention in new ways. The most meaningful changes I have experienced were not dramatic or instantaneous. They were subtle shifts in awareness that allowed me to recognize patterns I had overlooked for years. Rather than seeing my body as something that occasionally failed me, I began to experience it as something that had been communicating all along.

One example was a period of persistent tendonitis that never seemed to fully resolve. I had approached it as many people do, focusing almost exclusively on the physical symptom itself. During my work with psychedelic medicine, however, my attention shifted away from simply wanting the pain to disappear. Instead, I became aware of the countless ways I was unconsciously contributing to the problem through repetitive movement, muscular tension, and habitual patterns of holding my body. The experience did not magically repair tissue. What it offered was a new perspective, one that allowed me to understand the injury as information rather than an obstacle. That change in awareness became an essential part of the healing process.

I experienced something similar while trying to understand persistent ear rumbling that had puzzled me for months. Instead of viewing it as an isolated issue within the ear itself, I began noticing how closely it was connected to tension throughout my neck, jaw, and nervous system. I could observe how stress, posture, breathing, and muscular activation interacted in ways I had never consciously recognized before. The experience did not provide a medical diagnosis, nor did it replace appropriate medical evaluation. What it offered was something equally valuable: a broader understanding of the relationships occurring within my own body. Once those relationships became visible, I could begin responding to them with greater intention through movement, breathwork, relaxation, and changes in daily habits.

These experiences have also influenced the way I listen to the stories shared by others. Over the years, I have worked with participants who described unexpected physical changes following psychedelic experiences. One individual who had lived with chronic back pain for years reported meaningful improvements in both pain and mobility after his experience. I cannot conclude that the medicine repaired damaged tissue, and his story should never be presented as clinical evidence. At the same time, it invites thoughtful questions. Did his nervous system begin processing pain differently? Did long-held muscular guarding finally release? Did the experience help him recognize emotional or behavioral patterns that had been contributing to his discomfort? Or was something else occurring that current science has yet to fully explain?

Another participant described years of persistent pressure and discomfort in his head that he associated with repeated sports-related impacts earlier in life. Following his experience, he reported substantial relief from those symptoms. Again, I cannot claim that the medicine produced neurological repair, nor should anyone interpret his story as proof of treatment for traumatic brain injury. Persistent neurological symptoms deserve careful evaluation by qualified medical professionals. Yet experiences like these remain meaningful because they remind us that the nervous system is extraordinarily complex. Chronic symptoms often involve inflammation, autonomic regulation, emotional stress, pain processing, sleep, muscular tension, and countless other interacting systems. Even if we cannot fully explain why someone experiences improvement, their story deserves both compassion and thoughtful investigation.

Reflecting on these experiences has also changed the way I think about the language we use when discussing healing. We often speak about healing and cure as though they are interchangeable, but I have come to believe they describe very different realities. A cure generally implies that a disease or injury has been eliminated. Healing, on the other hand, can occur even when a diagnosis remains. It may involve less pain, greater mobility, increased resilience, or a renewed relationship with the body itself. Someone living with chronic illness may never receive a cure, yet still experience profound healing through greater regulation of the nervous system, deeper self-understanding, healthier habits, or the restoration of hope and connection.

This distinction feels especially important when discussing psychedelic medicine. If we frame these experiences as miracle cures, we risk creating unrealistic expectations while overlooking the deeper transformations that often occur. Healing is not always measured by medical imaging, laboratory values, or the complete disappearance of symptoms. Sometimes it is measured by the return of movement, the softening of fear, the willingness to care for ourselves differently, or the realization that our bodies have been communicating wisdom we simply had not learned to hear.

The stories emerging from research laboratories, clinical settings, and personal experience all point toward the same conclusion: we are only beginning to understand the relationship between consciousness, the nervous system, and physical healing. Scientific inquiry will continue refining our understanding of what these medicines can and cannot do, and that work is essential. At the same time, lived experience continues to remind us that healing rarely fits neatly within the categories we create. The most responsible path forward is one that welcomes scientific discovery without abandoning humility, honors personal stories without confusing them with proof, and remains open to the possibility that the human body is more adaptable than we once imagined.

Perhaps the greatest lesson I have learned is that the body is not simply something we inhabit. It is an active participant in every experience we have. It remembers, adapts, protects, compensates, and continually seeks balance. Whether through meditation, yoga, psychotherapy, movement, meaningful relationships, or carefully supported psychedelic experiences, healing often begins with learning to listen rather than trying to force change.

If there is one invitation I hope readers take away from this exploration, it is not that psychedelic medicine can cure every illness, because the evidence simply does not support such a claim. Instead, it is the invitation to become more curious about the remarkable intelligence of the human body. As neuroscience continues to uncover new insights into neuroplasticity and the adaptability of the nervous system, we may find that healing is less about fixing what is broken and more about creating the conditions in which the body can remember its own capacity for balance.

Perhaps that is what it means to retune the physical body. Not to become someone new, but to gently restore harmony to a system that has been doing its best to protect us all along.
